Keep the litter out the lakes
DATE
LOCATION
19 October 2024
The section of river running between Bunyan Road and Tom Jones Road, one of the Entrances to the CBD
THE PROBLEM
The river running between the 2 lakes had tons of litter strewn all over its banks. The area was completely neglected and overgrown making entry into the area very challenging.
WHAT WE DID
The collaboration with Afriforum and Heart of Benoni on
19 October aimed to clean up an area surrounding our lakes, making
a start to reclaiming the well known title of ‘Benoni - City of Lakes’. The removal of litter hidden away amongst the overgrowth of thorn bushes was our main focus of the day. In order to retrieve the litter we needed to do major pruning of the trees on Bunyan Street. We were very grateful that the branches could be used at the Joburg zoo and they came to collect 3 big loads. Thank you too to Ekhuruleni waste who removed the rest. We collected a total of 94 bags plus 2 bulk bags full of litter.
