No one “owns” us — we’re a registered non-profit. Clean Projects was founded by Alison Etherington, but it runs on community support and volunteer power. This is a community movement, not a company.

We’re a community-powered non-profit launched in 2023 by a group of Benoni locals who were done waiting for “someone else” to step up. We're not a business, and we’re definitely not council-funded. Through donations from individuals and local businesses, we fund a small team that works Monday to Friday cleaning and maintaining public spaces — and we rally volunteers for community clean-up events on weekends. No red tape. No empty promises. Just action.

Nope. Every cent comes from businesses and individuals in the community. We receive no money from council.

During the week, our main focus areas are Snake Road/Pretoria Road and Great North Road — from the N12 offramp up to High Road — plus some intersecting roads and nearby spaces we maintain regularly. On weekends, we run clean-up events and special projects with volunteers. These are usually one-off missions to tackle hotspots or neglected areas that need some extra love — perfect for getting hands-on if you want to make a visible impact in a short time.

We’d love to cover the whole of Benoni — that’s the dream. And we’re always open to hearing where the needs are. But we also have to be realistic with what we can maintain. Doing a once-off clean-up in an area is easy. The real challenge is keeping it clean — because in 3 months, the grass is back, the litter’s back, and the effort was wasted. That’s why we prioritise areas we can return to regularly and maintain properly.

Heck yes. Benoni started with a handful of frustrated folks, one street corner, and a lot of black bags. If you’re keen to make change, we’ll happily share what’s worked for us.
