THE PROBLEM

St Dunstan’s College Students Volunteer for Clean Projects on ‘I Serve’ Day

On a bright and sunny, winter's day, St Dunstan's College students demonstrated the true spirit of service during their ‘I Serve’ Day, by joining forces with Clean Projects for an inspiring community clean-up initiative. Their mission: to help restore and rejuvenate the environment around the field on Moodie and De Mist Streets, right behind the Linmed Hospital in Rynfield.

A Day of Purpose and Impact

‘’I Serve’’ Day at St Dunstan’s College is a cherished tradition, where students get the opportunity to step out of the classroom and into the community to make a tangible difference. This year, they teamed up with Clean Projects, an organization dedicated to promoting environmental sustainability and creating cleaner, healthier urban spaces.

WHAT WE DID

The group of eager and motivated students tackled the cut grass that had accumulated around the perimeter of the field, working together to transform the area into a cleaner, more inviting space for everyone in the community to enjoy. Their energy and enthusiasm were contagious as they also cleared plastic, paper, and other debris, while also raising awareness about the importance of environmental responsibility.

Creating a Lasting Impact

What began as a simple clean-up project turned into an opportunity to connect with neighbours and inspire others to take action. The students shared their experiences with friends, family, and social media followers, spreading awareness about the importance of keeping our streets clean.

Adding Colour to Their Contribution

Beyond picking up litter and grass, the students also turned their attention to the kerbing around their school. Once dull and weather-worn, the kerbs received a much-needed fresh lick of paint. Armed with brushes and black and white paint, the students enthusiastically brought new life to the intersection.

As they painted, laughter and chatter filled the air—proof that meaningful work can also be fun and social. The kerbing project became a creative outlet and a visible, lasting mark of their efforts and teamwork.

Not only did it brighten up the area, but it also deepened the students' sense of ownership and pride in their surroundings.

A Day Well Spent

At the end of the day, the transformation of the area was clear. What was once a litter-strewn field had now become a cleaner, safer space for all to enjoy. It was a perfect example of how small acts of service can lead to big changes when people come together for a common cause.

As the students left the site with smiles on their faces and a sense of pride in their work, they also took away a deeper understanding of the importance of environmental stewardship, community involvement, and the power of collective action.

WHO MADE IT HAPPEN

A Shared Commitment to a Cleaner Future

The collaboration between St Dunstan’s College and Clean Projects was a natural fit, both parties being deeply committed to fostering a cleaner, greener environment. The students not only helped to remove waste but also engaged in conversations about the long-term impact of litter on local ecosystems and the community’s well-being.

“We are incredibly proud of our students for their dedication to making a difference. It’s inspiring to see them working so hard to make our streets and green spaces cleaner,” said one of the college's community engagement coordinators. “This project embodies the values we hold dear at St Dunstan’s—community, responsibility, and service.”

Clean Projects, which aims to raise environmental awareness and mobilize communities to take action, was thrilled to have the support of St Dunstan’s students.  “The students brought so much energy and determination to the task. Their involvement not only helped improve the environment but also created a lasting bond between the college and the local community,” said a representative from Clean Projects.

The ‘I Serve’ Day also served as a reminder to all of us that our environment is something we all need to care for and protect, and that every bit of effort counts in building a cleaner, more sustainable world.

For St Dunstan's College, this event was not just about cleaning up a neighborhood — it was about building character, fostering a sense of responsibility, and inspiring future generations to take care of their environment. And based on the energy and passion the students displayed, we can be confident that the next generation of community leaders is already on their way.
